On June 25th I found myself back in the northeast for a short stay while taking care of some personal business, I decided to see what I could stumble across in two days, this being day 1, After a 15 hour Amtrak ride aboard the Carolinian to Philadelphia I woke up and drove toward Paulsboro in search of WPCA-11 and followed them to Pureland where i'd stick around for SMS and then completed my da...

In 2018 prior to moving to North Carolina a few years later, i made a visit to the area to do some railfanning along Norfolk Southern's crucial mainline to Atlanta, I spent three days catching trains in various locations and was even able to catch the mainline manifest on the S-Line something that is few and far between in the days post PSR. On May 31st, 2018, hundreds of railfans flocked trackside to catch Union Pacific's Executive train, me included. I would chase the train and ultimately catch the outbound move on the Sunday after on its way to Hariman, New York traversing the former Erie Railroad line to Cambell Hall. RailFanMike Productions...

After a powerful nor'easter ripped its way across the east coast i spent the following day documenting the derailments on CSX which saw train cars take a plunge into the Susquehanna river below and on the East Penn Railroad where winds caused a box car and flat car to flip over taking their last unit off the rails with them. I stuck around for some of the work being done at the East Penn scene ...

    Westtown: Yes, it was a station stop on the commuter line. I used that station many times until that part of the line closed. The building is now an Art Gallery. It was also once a small post office. The replacement Post Office is nearby. After Westtown service closed, I had to take the bus to West Chester from 69th street, a much less enjoyable ride. And as for speeds on that part of the line, at least when I was riding in 1980-82, I think 40 mph is optimistic. I remember it being a painfully slow ride after maybe Elwyn. Closer to 30 mph.

Speaking of I actually have footage of another derailment in the month of May I’m working on editing features the same issue in what started as a chase to the Wilsmere turn crew only made it a few miles before rolling some wheels on a curve.

Thankfully I was able to work with NS and get some of the fallen signals including the heads from CP Blandon seen in the video, I didn’t put them up yet as I put another G in its spot, it came from CP Burn just up the road in Allentown, 3 heads fully restored and soon to be operational

    Several years ago when CP single tracked their Winchester sub, they replaced all of their block signals with these type. Sections of the removed line were retained as long sidings. Interestingly, they didn’t bother to remove the old telegraph poles, a number of which still have their copper wires in place, but have likely not drawn current in many years.

    I have never understood what makes existing signal masts and signal heads non-PTC compliant. I understand that the controls are massively different. But at their most basic, the signals themselves seem pretty low-tech. If there is a qualified signal engineer or maintainer reading this, can you explain? Thanks.

    • @RailFanMikeProductions
      @RailFanMikeProductions 3 месяца назад

      I’ve wondered the same, I just assumed they figured it’d be easier to replace the entire apparatus rather than upgrade it. Amtrak has proved that’s possible

    • @DCRailfanner
      @DCRailfanner 3 месяца назад

      There isn't anything different. The control system doesn't care what style or shape the heads are, they're just some lightbulbs at the end of the day. Oftentimes the work is done at the same time because there will be a signal crew already on site, so it's more efficient. It also brings everything in a certain location up to the railroad's current standard, which makes maintenance easier and cheaper. No sense in having signals that are harder to get parts for when you can replace them for a little added upfront cost.

    • @ArtStoneUS
      @ArtStoneUS 3 месяца назад

      Block signals are based on assumptions about train speed, length, and length of the block - in order to maintain adequate separation. This approach is now very inefficient. Once the trains are under ptc, the computers are controlling the speed and distance between trains.

    • @markbarnett1962
      @markbarnett1962 3 месяца назад

      @ArtStoneUS so what happens if the computers fail? Do the trains automatically stop or do they run into one an other? Just curious.

    Okay this makes no sense whatsoever, where is a couple of cars were blown over by the wind, the trees still made a windscreen enough that kept it from being a lot worse not to mention the fact that the trains came to arrest because of the trees but will chop the trees down to get into the cars when they were gaping holes they could have gotten to them around the trees so the next wind gusts through their there won't be a natural windbreak and even more cars will get blown over and derailed, real intelligent there guys not!
